A decreasing trend in physical activity patterns has been associated with an increase in obesity and other health problems and lifestyle illnesses. As a result, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care have developed the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians. Active Australia launched the Guidelines in mid-1999, which are currently endorsed by the Heart Foundation.

The guidelines refer to the minimum levels of physical activity required for good health. They are not intended for high-level fitness or sports training. Ten years ago, the recommendation for exercise was to do 30 minutes of vigorous and continuous aerobic activity at least three times a week. The current (four) guidelines comprise a set of more achievable physical activity recommendations / goals that will still benefit overall health.
