The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating (AGHE), developed by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, is a contemporary Australian food guide which reflects the multicultural nature of the population and which is relevant for use by all food sectors as a national nutrition and education tool.

The development of the Guide fulfils one of the objectives of the Food and Nutrition policy (1992) - to help Australians to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to choose a healthy diet. It has not been designed to replace other food guides, but rather to clarify and build upon the tools already available to the public.

The AGHE is primarily concerned with physical health. Its purpose is to provide information, based on recent research in nutrition and widely accepted scientific principles, to help people choose a healthy diet from a variety of foods. It includes specific quantities and combinations of foods for children, adolescents, adults, pregnant and breast-feeding women, and vegetarians, based on Australian eating patterns.

The Guide is also supported by educational material, developed for use and reference by health educators as well as consumers.
