The Janet Bryson Travel Scholarship is a travel scholarship which funds a PhD student from any Australian or New Zealand university to attend and present their research at an international obesity conference.
Requests to support travel for visits to prestigious institutions, or to facilitate high quality international research interactions, may be considered.
The bursary for 2009 will be AUD $2,500 which will be paid through an arrangement with the successful applicant’s University.
ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must:
§ Be an Australian or NZ citizen, or permanent resident of Australia or NZ.
§ Be enrolled as a full-time student (or part-time with no source of income) in a program of PhD studies at a recognised Australian or NZ university .
§ Complete the official application form and supply all required documentation.
SELECTION:
§ Selection will be by open competition with the judges’ decision final.
§ Applications will be assessed by the awards committee of ANZOS, using pre-defined criteria, on the basis of academic record, quality of research project, support from department and proposed abstract and meeting to which it will be submitted.
§ Previous level of financial support for travel from ANZOS will be considered.
ROUNDS, APPLICATIONS AND CLOSING DATES:
Round 1 was awarded in February this year.
The closing date for round 2 will be Monday, August 17th, 2009.
Note - The Janet Bryson Travel Scholarship has replaced the Janet Bryson Memorial Scholarship.
Janet Bryson was a senior research scientist and supervisor of Honours and postgraduate students at the University of Sydney. She was also a strong supporter of obesity research as well as the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity (now known as the Obesity Society).
The Janet Bryson Memorial Scholarship, in honour of Janet's memory, was previously awarded to a first year PhD student who was undertaking a research program in any aspect of obesity.Through the scholarship, the Obesity Society's aim was to support PhD students undertaking a program of study in obesity research at an Austalian or New Zealand university.
In 2004, the Scholarship was awarded to Elissa Rao to begin a PhD in reducing sudden death in obese people by dietary manipulation at the University of Wollongong.
In 2005, the Scholarship was awarded to Larissa Prior to undertake a PhD study into the role of leptin in the CNS mediation of obesity related hypertension at the University of Melbourne.
In 2006, the Scholarship was awarded to Jennifer Keogh to undertake a PhD study in diet, obesity and cardiovascular disease risk at the University of Adelaide.
In 2007, the Scholarship was awarded to Namson Lau.
In 2008, the Janet Bryson Memorial Scholarship was not awarded.
